Face or Neck Sagging

As we age and skin elasticity decreases, we begin to see the sagging of skin tissue.  This is evident everywhere from our eyebrows, eyelids, cheeks (causing nasolabial folds), jawline (jowls), and neck. This creates the neck sagging and jowling that is one of the most common complaints by patients.

With the graduated approach method, I am looking to address problems appropriate to their severity.  A small amount of sagging of neck tissue in a young patient may be managed differently than a larger amount of sagging in an older patient.

Aging is by far the most common cause of face and neck sagging. Due to loss of elasticity over time, the skin begins to drift downward and inward due to the forces of gravity. Genetics also play a role, with some patients showing signs of changes in the 40’s while others may not exhibit these changes until later.

We recommend all patients lose weight and achieve their goal weight prior to any surgical intervention. Even 5-10 lbs may make a difference in regards to the amount of excess skin present.

Treatment Options

Skin laxity is best corrected using procedures that lift and tighten the skin of the face and neck.

  1. Facelift – The most powerful way to address excess skin and ptosis of tissues of the face which lead to jowling and prominence of the nasolabial folds, marionette lines and jowling.
  2. Necklift – Designed to tighten the neck skin, soften the vertical platysmal bands, and restore a sharp neck and jawline.
  3. Fat Transfer – although loss of elasticity is a major component of skin laxity, volume loss of the face is another big contributor and should be addressed for the most natural results
  4. Radiofrequency Skin Tightening – Reserved for very specific cases, this may provide a small degree of tightening of the skin
  5. Laser Resurfacing – although not a skin tightening treatment, this may be combined with face and neck lifting to improve the texture of the skin and minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
