How to Prepare Yourself For Your First Facial Plastic Surgery

It’s normal to be a little nervous before your first facial surgery procedure – whether it is a facelift, a rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, etc –  but rest assured that Dr. Jordan Rihani is a professional, board certified facial plastic surgeon with years of experience. Someone who can offer advice to ease your nerves, and he’ll provide you with all the information you need for a smooth facial surgery operation and recovery. Here’s a quick guide to everything you need to know before your surgery.

In The Weeks Before the Operation

As a Facial Plastic Surgery Institute patient, you’ll have ample opportunities to visit with your doctor before plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery, including during the consultation visit. This is the time to ask any questions you may have about the operation, recovery, risks or costs.

You may need to have lab work done before your surgery, such as a blood count, to ensure that your body is healthy enough to undergo plastic surgery. Your surgeon will provide you with information in the weeks leading up to your procedure that will outline what medications you may not take before the procedure, including anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin, as these increase bleeding risks following surgery. In addition, we will provide you with all of the necessary post-operation recovery instructions. Please review all materials thoroughly before surgery, and make sure you have the outlined supplies and medications well in advance.

If you smoke, you should stop for at least two weeks before and two weeks after your surgery. This will improve blood circulation and your body’s ability to heal itself.

The Night Before

On the eve of surgery, we ask that you shampoo your hair and wash your entire body with an antibacterial soap. To help you relax before the facial surgery, try turning this routine into some TLC time and take a bath with a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Drink lots of water in days prior to your surgery – we generally recommend at least 60 oz of water in the days prior to your surgery. Providing anesthesia to a well-hydrated patient has numerous benefits and will be an easier process for patients as well as the anesthesia team.

Recovery After the Operation

Part of prepping for plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery involves stocking your home for the recovery period. Make sure you’ve gathered plenty of recovery foods – soft, bland foods such as pudding, Jell-O, and frozen prepared meals. On your bedside table, we recommend you keep your medications, water bottles, snacks, and a fully charged phone and your charger. Indulge in adding a bed wedge pillow or recliner mattress to your bed so you can rest easy while you recover!

Dr. Rihani also recorded a podcast for patients that covers what to expect and the best self-care practices following surgery. He recommends patients listen to the podcast before and after their procedures.
