What is dermatochalasis?

Dermatochalasis is taken from the Greek words “dermato-” meaning skin and “-chalasis” meaning relaxation. This “relaxation of skin” often refers to looseness of skin of the upper and lower eyelids. This skin looseness is one of the most common conditions dealt with in facial plastic surgery. The excision of excess eyelid skin is known as a “blepharoplasty” or commonly known as an eyelid lift.

If you have excess upper eyelid skin, it can present as hooded eyelids and can be corrected with this relatively easy procedure. An upper blepharoplasty can be performed in the office and under local anesthesia, making this one of the most common surgeries we perform. Dr. Rihani performs blepharoplasty in both his Southlake and Fort Worth offices. If you are interested in blepharoplasty, give us a call.
